Al-though they were kind to him, La Salle was very unfortunate in his explora-tions and after many months spent in searching for the Jlis-sis-sip-pi river hefinally met his death at the hands of one of his companions. About ten yearsafter La Salles death France made another effort to colonize the Mis-sis-sip-pivalley. Le-moine Di-ber-ville was given the command of an expedition andin 1699 he sailed from France to explore the territory which La Salle had dis-covered and in which he had lost his life. He entered the Gulf of Mex-i-co and sailed up the Mis-sis-sip-pi river.He made a second voyage in 1700 and established a settlement about thirtymiles below the present city of New Or-leans.
