Description
Svenska: FIGUR. TAKTEGEL.
English: Roof-tile. Stoneware roof tile with coloured lead glazes. Ming dynasty, 16th – 17th century. Objects beloved of early 20th century Western collectors were Ming dynasty roof tiles, for whom their skillful modelling seemed miniature marvels of sculpture; whereas to Chinese connoisseurs of the time, tiles were commonplace building materials. Countess Wihelmina was no exception, and in her collection is this fierce Celestial Warrior with black demon’s face, riding along the roof ridge on a spirited black horse, clouds beneath his feet, and his left hand grasping a spear or sword which is now lost.
