[edit]

This image incorrectly shows a right hand, when the arms need to show a left hand cut off at the wrist. Also, they are correctly presented as "clan arms", which do not exist. Coats of arms were never granted to a clan, but to the O'Neill family of Ulster and Tyrone, which is now an extinct family. [tk] XANDERLIPTAK 07:09, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coat of arms of the Connacht branch of the Cloinne Domhnaill from 1646
I am not an expert of heraldry but I would like to stress two points: Firstly, the right hand is to be found on some of these Irish coat of arms that are related to some branch of the O'Neill family. Secondly, it is not uncommon to associate a coat of arms in Ireland to a clan or, in Irish, to a cloinne. The attached photo shows an example from 1646 demonstrating these two points. --AFBorchert (talk) 22:10, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Blazon of the arms of the O'Neill family according to Edward MacLysaght, Irish Families – Their Names, Arms, and Origins, Plate XXIII: “Argent two lions rampant combatant gules supporting a dexter hand couped at the wrist of the last, in chief three estoiles of the second, in base waves of the sea therein naiant a salmon all proper.” From this we see two points: Firstly, the O'Neills have indeed a dexter hand, i.e. a right hand. Secondly, the arms are more complex, the so-called Red Hand of Ulster is just a prominent part of it. --AFBorchert (talk) 20:29, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
