Cropping or extraction of image

[edit]

Where borders are desired they should be added with wikimarkup or code. If the image is cropped, the original image is still available in the history, but if the consensus is that the image should not be cropped, it still allows for extraction of the actual image, without the borders. If the image is released under a CC-by-sa license, it allows for derivative works. --Bensin (talk) 03:56, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This image is an artwork. It is a contact print taken from large format negative. The black frame is an entire part of the artwork. Please do not crop this image! Mona Lisa is a Public domain artwork, too. You can crop this image. But to make a derivate work from the Mona Lisa image is a totally stupid thing. Cropping the Jan Reich image is a totally stupid thing as well. --Gampe (talk) 17:56, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said: If the image is cropped, the original image would still be available in the history. Images with unnecessary borders should have the borders removed. If, however, the consensus would be that the image should not be cropped (which I'm pretty certain it's not), it still allows for extraction of the actual image, without the borders and the original image would be left completely intact. If the image is released under a CC-by-sa license, it does allows for derivative works. If you honestly believe that making derivate works from the Mona Lisa, or any other image on Commons, is a "totally stupid thing", then I suspect you are not really on board with what Commons is all about: "Everyone is allowed to copy, use and modify any files here". If you still disagree with me on this and plan to revert my edit yet again, I suggest you point to guidelines or policies that support your edit. --Bensin (talk) 08:00, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Bensin, it seems to me, that You invented the Cropbot and You need to feed him at any price. Please try to use the commons sens. Thanks! --Gampe (talk) 11:51, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
