"Watermark"[edit]

Hello Bensin,

I think you might have misunderstood the use of the template "watermark", for example in the case of File:Signe Kolthoff Scenen 1927.jpg. It is hardly supposed to be applied to historical signatures made by the original producers of a picture such as a famous photographer signing his photos (just like an artist would sign a painting). As I understand the meaning of Commons:Exif#Watermark this is about that Commons users shouldn't themselves add promotional or other text at pictures they upload. Thus I will remove your requests for removal of actual historical signatures in photos. /FredrikT (talk) 18:08, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

@FredrikT: Hello! I read you. But the proposed guideline Commons:Watermarks is unclear on what to do with "Visible watermarks, which are neither destructive nor promotional." Personally I'd prefer to have them removed as long as the original is saved too in the history. --Bensin (talk) 22:15, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
To me that would be destroying a part of the original art work. I can't imagine the writers of the guidleline having had this kind of signatures in mind. /FredrikT (talk) 23:57, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
@FredrikT: If the previous version is kept in the history, the original work is still accessible to all and thus not destroyed. --Bensin (talk) 00:21, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Yes, but the version shown in the articles would be a "false" version, and that's the version seen by most people. Would you edit out the signature on a painting, or in a written text? /FredrikT (talk) 09:35, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
@FredrikT: I would not. But an artist's signature in a painting is not considered a watermark: Commons:Watermarks#What_are_not_watermarks. As for what can be considered a "false" version may be a matter of oppinion, I suppose. If a photographer adds a visible "watermark" (logo or signature) to a photo, I would argue that the photo without the mark is the more authentic version and thus preferable. But, as stated, I want the uploaded image preserved in the media page history. --Bensin (talk) 05:57, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
I've posted a question about this at Commons talk:Watermarks#Photographers' signatures on historical photos asking for a clarification. However I, note that the section about watermarks here links to an article which is only about en:Digital watermarking, suggesting that original signatures and other sorts of text on analogue media (prints, traditional photos) should not be affected at all. /FredrikT (talk) 16:04, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
@FredrikT: Great! I added a comment there. Let's see how it plays out. It'll be good to have the issue resolved and the proposed guideline clarified. --Bensin (talk) 16:50, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Rombo[edit]

Hi, could you please crop the image Gunnar Lundberg and Elin Rombo 2010.jpg, so that only Elin Rombo is seen. I would really appreciate it.--BabbaQ (talk) 23:20, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

@BabbaQ: Hello! I usually don't perform the cropping myself, so I added the {{Extract image}}-template on the image and suggested that the image of Rombo be extracted into a new picture. If you prefer another area you can delete the note (hove the mouse pointer over the note and a popup message will allow you to delete it) and add a new note instead. --Bensin (talk) 11:14, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

File:Anders Zorn - Frukost i det gröna.jpg[edit]

Hi, Bensin, I was wondering if you could help translate into English. I suggested Breakfast in the green, does that feel alright? Thank you for your time. Face-smile.svg Lotje (talk) 04:21, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello, @Lotje: The best thing would be to use an official English title for the work if there is one. If not, be sure to clearly state that we're supplying a translation of the Swedish title. Your literal translation from Swedish to English is correct, but I don't know the correct phrasing in English. Wiktionary seems to suggest[1][2] using the plural "greens". Also, should the preposition be "in" or "among"? Pehaps best ask a native English speaker if you want to be certain. Hope that helps some. --Bensin (talk) 15:11, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you Bensin. I left a question on the talkpage of the file. Maybe someone will come along (one day...) and translate it correctyly. Lotje (talk) 15:15, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
