English: Jade Cong

  • Neolithic Period (3300 - 2200 B.C.)
From the lower Yangzi River Valley, this cong was used in rituals of worship; it has a square outside, symbolizing earth, and round inside, symbolizing heaven. A medium used the cong to communicate with the spirits of heaven and earth. Most congs have been found in large, elaborate tombs, and were likely owned by nobles.
