Портрет не окончен.

В Каталоге 1980 не датирован. Датируется временем между датами приезда Ротари в Россию (1756) и исполнения гравюры и смерти императрицы (1761), вероятно, ближе к 1761, так как остался незаконченным.

Ротари неоднократно писал Елизавету Петровну. После смерти художника в его мастерской осталось пять ее неоконченных портретов. Портрет „в черной кружевной мантилье" считался одним из лучших и, по мнению Штелина (Штелин 1990, с. 74), самых похожих портретов императрицы. По сведениям Ровинского, портрет после смерти императрицы принадлежал графу И. И. Шувалову (Ровинский. Портреты, т. 2, стб 942).
