This illustration shows HD 189733b, a huge gas giant that orbits very close to its host star HD 189733. By observing this planet before, during, and after it disappeared behind its host star during orbit, astronomers were able to deduce that HD 189733b is a deep, azure blue — reminiscent of Earth’s colour as seen from space.

Rembrandt’s portrait of his son Titus from 1655 is a special favourite of Jeroen Giltaij, curator of the old masters. Although the collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen has several portraits by Rembrandt, such as that of the Amsterdam lady Aletta Adriaensdochter (1639), he thinks that nothing compares to the portrait of Titus. Jeroen Giltaij explains what makes this painting so special.

Edgar Degas’s famous sculpture of a dancer, that is now in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum collection, really needed a new ribbon in her hair. Her current ribbon, which had been tied around her bronze ponytail in the ‘nineties, was too obtrusive in both colour and size. After some research by a textile restorer, a new ribbon was chosen - one that looked more like the one Degas gave the dancer himself in 1881. This video shows how in April 2011, just before the opening of De Collectie Verrijkt [The Collection Enriched] and under the watchful eye of various experts, the dancer had a new ribbon placed in her hair.
