Not really incorrect just unrecognized

[edit]

I'm thinking about removing the {{#switch:...|[[Category:Taxasource to correct]]}} part because when I add a source I like to link directly to the page where the info is, not the a website's main page (although I can see where that would make sense too). I was think of adding another parameter that would be for things like the ITIS number but I don't know if that would make it easier. Copy'n'pasting the whole url is how most people would do it anyway and not needing to remember another parameter is always good. Rocket000 (talk) 03:21, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am studying the problem. Liné1 (talk) 09:07, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I created {{Tolweb}} for referencing tolweb.org pages.
When the reference is provided with a template like {{ITIS}}, {{Tolweb}}..., the exact url is not needed.
But we could add |url= to {{Taxa}}, {{Genera}}, {{Genera2}}, {{Species}}, {{Species2}}. This parameter would superseed the |source=.
In that case we could document that feature in the 5 templates but also in Category:Taxasource to correct

I know it's not necessary but I find it a lot more convenient if it links directly to the page. Especially for sites like TOLweb which are constantly being updated. It's better than having to list the link separately. I think instead of having a url parameter we can just use source for both (all we have to do is remove the switch that checks if it's "correct"). Sensu

[edit]

What about a "sensu" parameter for when you are making a list based on one particular treatment of a taxon? For some areas you simply can't use a composition of classifications (which usually is the case when choosing one of the built-in sources) without running into conflicts elsewhere. This is a huge problem for Wikispecies because they don't care to tell anyone what classifications to follow when creating pages (sometimes you get lucky and they'll have references). As a result you might get a family, two subfamilies and some unheard of tribe all referring to the same group (something like this does exist on 'Species). Conflicts in the higher classification can be very difficult and a ton work to resolve. Thus, sometimes it's better to stick to a single publication rather than some dynamic website that uses multiple sources themselves. Rocket000 (talk) 04:23, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify: Sensu, meaning "in the sense of", could be used to state how the taxon is being treated here. I was mainly thinking of using it to give the author+year, but it could also be used as in sensu lato or sensu stricto I guess. Rocket000 (talk) 04:32, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, tried some things out. I guess this wouldn't be a good a way to do what I was thinking (it would probably just confuse people). Rocket000 (talk) 21:57, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Redesign

[edit]

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to redesign this template so that any combination of sources can be used. For example, instead of "|source=itis & species" we could do "|source=itis|source2=species". That way we wouldn't have to create any "xxx & yyy" entries since all combinations would be possible (and in any order). This also would allow us to set two different "name" parameters in case the sources use different names. However, this will involve quite a lot of work so I'm not sure if it's worth it. We would have to update all the templates that use this to allow for the new "source2" and "name2" parameters and update all current usage of the "xxx & yyy" values. The idea seems very good. But it would not work with {{Taxoconflict}}. Let me think about that a bit. Liné1 (talk) 20:25, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with Mammal Species of the World database

[edit]

Link seems to be broken on the source=MSW parameter (Mammal Species of the World): It redirects me to a university's chapel page. However i'm not sure i should update the URL's search function on the module, because the new URL system doesn't include the search term in it (it's https://www.departments.bucknell.edu/biology/resources/msw3/). Any ideas? Do we just add it like that and let people reproduce their desired searches manually, or is there another way to input searches on the target URL?
