Switzerland
[edit]Foto Pairs of Switzerland
- Notes:
- The railway and railway station era begins c. 1847 (Switzerland), the photochrome print era begins 1889 and gets less used with the World War I (the colour print and the black & white photo used for the print can be years apart). The photochrome print was a high quality colour print but very expensive, the glass plate black & white photography is cheaper (World War I). An improved artillery made the medieval city walls obsolete, c. battle of Marignano (1494–1559) and Frederick the Great, King of Prussia (1740–1786). Beginning in the end of XVIII Century: place was needed for roads and train stations. XX Century: fossil fuels made the use of wood as fuel obsolete.
- Zuerich ZH: roman base Turicum. Solothurn SO: vicus Salodurum in the roman era. Avenches VD: Aventicum, capital of Civitas Helvetiorum in the roman era. Windisch AG: Vindonissa, roman legionary encampment. Aarau AG: official roman stopping place, junction, connection to roman roads. Augst BL - Kaiseraugst AG: colonia Augusta Rauricorum in the roman era. Lenzburg AG: vicus Lindfeld in the roman era. Basel BS: maybe the roman stopping place Arialbinnum. St. Leodegar, Lucerne LU: monastarium Luciaria (c. 710 AD). The junctions of water ways and bridges were important.
