English: There are 60 Tyne and Wear Metro stations. The following page tabulates them by both physical feature and by platform/line position, then presents more detailed information and images of each, by transcluding their individual gallery page.

Tabulated[edit]

by physical features[edit]

The following table lists the stations by opening date and location, and the various physical features of the stations, plus which track section they are on (for full route details, see the next table).

Table key/notes
* N/C - Origin of station:
    • New for new build
    • Con. for converted from an existing railway station
  • Borough - which of the 5 metropolitan boroughs of Tyne and Wear the station is in
  • O/C/U - whether the station is:
    • Open - open to the elements (fully or partially)
    • Cov. - a station built by creating a cutting, then covering it fully by structures built over the platforms
    • Und. - a station built underground
  • Int. - interchanges available at the station, by mode - air, bus, car (park & ride), ferry (Shields Ferry), rail (Network Rail)
  • Line - whether the station is on the Green or Yellow lines of the Metro, or on the section of track shared by both of them, followed by the specific part of that line it is on (if not the shared section)
  • SP - station position on the line
    • End - stations at the end of a line (not necessarily the physical end of the track)
    • Thru - through stations on a line
  • P1 - number of platforms (faces, not structures)
  • P2 - platform (structure) type
    • Island - an island platform on a through line
    • Side (single) - a single side platform
    • Side (opposite) - two side platforms opposite each other, of equal length

    • Side (offset) - two side platforms, of equal length but only partially opposite each other
    • Side (staggered) - two side platforms, staggered along the line either side of an intervening structure (ie not opposite each other at all)
    • Airport - an island platform, but with each track terminated by buffers at one end of the island
    • Monument - two island platforms on different levels, at right angles
    • North Shields - two parallel side platforms, plus a bay platform

No building (a pair of back to back single sided shelters in the middle only). The station did originally have a station building built in the original Metro style, built at the end of and beyond the west end of the platform - this was removed to make way for the ramps for the bridges installed in 2008, being replaced by the smaller set of shelters
Access
Stairs and ramps in the eastern third, ascending east to footbridges across the tracks, south to the E-W Sunderland Road (B1426) and a small car park on the top of the retaining wall of the cutting, and north over the mainline to the E-W Mulberry Street (with ramps and stairs down to its level, beyond a boundary wall along the track). These steel footbridges and stairs/ramps were installed in January 2008, replacing an unramped Victorian iron and timber bridge

Gateshead[edit]

English: Gateshead Interchange is a bus/Metro transport interchange in the centre of Gateshead. The interchange building combines a ticket hall for the Metro station with covered waiting areas for a bus station. Buses can enter and exit the station at two places - via the north west corner to the N-S road A184 road, and via the south east corner, onto a road junction where 4 roads meet - West Street from the north, Jackson Street from the east, High West Street from the south and Bensham Road from the west. Inside the station they can follow bus only roads to navigate to the various stands, laid out around a one way loop in the northern half, and a bi-directional lane in the south. The Metro station also occupies two further underground levels. Originally opened in 1981, the bus stops were originally out in the open - on 29 March 2004, new structures were officially opened, which allow passengers to transfer between all bus stands and the Metro without going outside, and without crossing any of the bus lanes (a southern wing is connected to the main portion to the north via the underground level). A centrepiece of the upgraded interchange is a 100m long glass and steel sculpture, Opening Line by Danny Lane, installed along the middle of the bi-directional bus lane, to stop people crossing in front of the buses instead of using the subway between the buildings or the pedestrian crossing at the western end.

Haymarket Hub exterior[edit]

The Haymarket Hub building is a four sided modern glass structure. It is roughly square, 100' wide at its maximum width. It has a curved roof and wide radius corners, with each side featuring a full length arched feature, which roughly face each of the four compass directions.
