Postage Stamps[edit]

These are photographs of stamps lying on a dark background. I don't think the background constitues a border. It would be inappropriate to crop the image so as to remove the perforations, which are an inherent part of the object being illustrated. I submit that they should be left alone. Yes, some of the images in this category are; I've been meaning to remove those images for a while. There are about 50 images in the category those stamps are from and all have the same black border; and those are only stamps from Germany. Cropping/removing the background from every stamp image on the Commons would be exceedingly time-consuming and the perforations I believe should be kept as you said. I'll be sure to remove the images from this category now. -- Editor at Largetalk 22:34, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photos by Antoin Sevruguin[edit]

What shall we do with those Antoin Sevruguin photos with water mark "For Reference Use Only"? I am not sure whether they are for Commons at all. And I checked for usage - they are being used only on a subpage of the uploader. I cropped quite a lot of them, but I am not sure whether it worths it. Should I go on? Any comments? --Chech Explorer 07:23, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the cropping. I did not feel they were worth the effort. With the water mark, I don't feel they are ever going to be useable on a wiki. I discussed this with User:Nevit who felt they should stay but did not offer to do the necessary work. Finavon 13:29, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
example

We have thousands of images, mostly oval paintings and engravings like this one. What template should be used for a cleanup request? --Mattes (talk) 22:16, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{ifc|remove background & upload as transparent png}}. I did many of these cleanups a couple of years ago, they're fairly easy if the background is neutral and/or the shape is perfectly oval/circular. Using {{Crop}} is a bad idea since most people cleaning out the cat will be using jpegtran or some such and expecting straight rectangular crops, not background removal. -- Editor at Largetalk 23:44, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll use that in the future. Thanks, --Mattes (talk) 00:25, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
