Disambiguation[edit]

As a courtesy, for the sake of those (non-US) people who don't know that "New York" is the name of a state as well as a city, suggest this category moved to Category:New York State. David Kernow 16:18, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To just about everyone in the UK and probably most people in the world "New York" means the city I think (see the Washington discussion). New York appears to be officially called just "New York" although it is often called "New York City". Keeping the cat as it might be easier for sorting files though as pages intended for the city can be filtered through but if it is a DAB it may cause pages to be put in the wring cat as it might be unclear which cat they should be in. However for our readers it might still end them on the wrong page (thinking it is the city) and most people would probably not add "City" on to the end considering how important it is. Without addressing the main points, no, the official name of the city is "City of New York" though "New York City" is commonplace and equally precise. "Greater New York" was commonplace in the 20th century. "New York" is official for the state, though Americans also use it to mean the city, almost as often as foreigners do. Incidentally, I'm sitting in "New York, New York" which designates a much smaller bit; the island of Manhattan also called New York County. It's a small island, but I suspect over half the City photos are here, and many foreigners are unaware that any of the city, much less the great majority, is not on my island. The AP Stylebook lists it as just "New York" and the discussions indicate that that's what its official name is. The discussions seem to indicate that the state is called "New York State". nyc.gov uses "City of New York" and ny.gov uses "New York State", this website from England uses "New York State" as clearly people would think the place if they just put "New York". What I am trying to say is that to most of the world "New York" without qualification means the city (see WP:ASTONISH), I might be wrong but I don't expect that many people outside the US would put in New York City because it would be normal to expect that a global city of the importance of New York would have the main title and if people knew about the state they would expect it to be disambiguated. I don't think its the same as Lincoln/Abraham Lincoln where it would still be reasonable to expect people to put in his full name anyway[1]. Look at Durham for example, that was at just Durham rather than Durham City despite County Durham or Durham, NC (which is much larger) for a long time and is still at just Durham, England (although it maybe couldn't have been moved due to the local government district having city status. New York has now been moved on Wikipedia to New York (state), after the links have been fixed and people have got used to the change maybe New York City could be moved to New York, should we think about doing this here as well. Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:27, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Highways too?[edit]

So the new disambiguation between New York State and New York City includes highways too? I thought this would be one of the few exemptions. Category:U.S. Route 1 in Georgia doesn't have the "(U.S. state)" suffix attached to it. ----DanTD (talk) 15:31, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say yes. The (state) is used for Category:U.S. Highways in Washington (state) and we should for New York as well. The reason it is perfectly possible for highways in New York state to pass through New York City. Therefore "I-95 in New York" is ambiguous and should be clarified. For simplicity if its needed for some roads, it should be done for all roads.
In contrast its not necessary for Georgia, as no US Highway goes through the country of Georgia.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:13, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I suppose I'm sold. For the record, I have been meaning to split the category with Category:U.S. Route 1 in New York City and Category:U.S. Route 1 in Westchester County, New York. That and Category:New York State Route 25 is another road category I've considered splitting between NYC and Nassau and Suffolk Counties. I've got NOTHING that can be put in black and white. Even if I took some of the stuff I've done when I was up north in November and early December and edited it to be in black and white, it'd be more pathetic than my attempt to do that old sign at 103rd Street - Corona Plaza. They're not my work (nor are they IMO very good photographs), but I happened to recall a number of old black-and-white images from Panoramio that I'd earlier filed into one of the "Buffalo by month and year" categories.
