Fonds Eugène Trutat[edit]

As part of a cooperation project between Wikimédia France and the City of Toulouse (see announcement & short Signpost coverage), the city archives of Toulouse donated 200 photographs from the "Fonds Eugène Trutat", from famous photographer Eugène Trutat.

The metadata are in XML format (see sample). Most of the fields are used. I still have to deal with the geoname, very interesting as it gives the place of the photograph, and would allow further description and categorisation per street. Unfortunately, the data is highly uneven, making the whole thing tricky to parse (still some work ahead of me).

Please see test upload File:Fonds Eugène Trutat - Toulouse. Café Albrighi. Juillet 1905.jpg in the original version (already got some awesome editors to categorise it further ;-).

I am looking forward your comments (especially as it is my first batch upload). I would particularly appreciate input on filenaming (I settled for [[File:Fonds Eugène Trutat - <title>.jpg]] but I am not quite sure), and categorisation (do not have much clue on that one).

Thanks, Jean-Fred (talk) 00:57, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Opinions[edit]

I'd suggest "<title> (<date>) - Fonds Eugène Trutat" or maybe just FET instead of "Fonds Eugène Trutat". This is useful since the names get clipped when they're viewed in a category and having the title first gives quick explanation as to what the image is about.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 11:16, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sample looks very good. The geoname can be used for categorization. See Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph for examples. I'm with Diaa on the title. See you in Paris! (if I manage to get there with all the snow). Multichill (talk) 12:22, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hum... I realise it might be a good idea to include the Accession number, which would also serve as the sort key. I would then have liked "Eugène Trutat - <id> - <title> (<year>)"
What would you think then of "<id> - <title> (<year>) - Eugène Trutat" ?
Note : <titles> are very irregular, but there is not much I can do about it (title is the title). There is not always a year, but I will include it when possible.

Please put the title up front if available. Adding the id is very useful. Multichill (talk) 21:55, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. It will look like something along the lines of « Toulouse. Tour de l’hôtel d’Assézat - 51Fi111 - Fonds Trutat.jpg » Jean-Fred (talk) 22:09, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to tell : I do use geonames for categorisation (a real pain, very uneven data), but it worked out somehow.
Shall I include a "to check" category ?
Jean-Fred (talk) 21:44, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't hurt with 200 photos. Multichill (talk) 21:55, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing. I'll go for Category:Fonds Trutat - Archives municipales de Toulouse to check then. Jean-Fred (talk) 22:09, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please see test upload of five images in Category:Fonds Trutat - Archives municipales de Toulouse. Looking forward your comments! Jean-Fred (talk) 22:52, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just created {{Archives municipales de Toulouse - FET link}} to link to the database of the city archives. I did not do it before because I doubt these are permalinks (have a look at the URLs...). Shall I include it in the ID field ? Jean-Fred (talk) 13:59, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I completed the upload earlier today. Also renamed the first two uploads to match the pattern we defined, and fixed (manually) the early test uploads (which did not have deep links to the archives records).

There is still categorisation work to do (some of those inferred from the metadata have to be created, fixed or removed), but this has to be done manually.

Thanks a lot to Multichill and Diaa abdelmoneim for their input!
