The streets running north andsouth were named—as now—First, Second, Third, Fourth, etc., but those running east and west receivedentirely different appellations from those they now be;ir.Surveyor-General De Witt was as chtssical in regard toOswegos streets as he or the land-commissioners had beenrespecting the townships of the Military tract, and theconstellations of the heavens were utilized an freely as theheroes of Greece and Home had been. Only nine street;!were named at the time in question, but the number ofappellations txiken fVom the celestial .sphere was afterwardsincreased to fifteen.
