A Chart of Rivers and Lakes Falling into Hudsons Bay (Philip Turnor 1778-1779) Philip Turnor commenced his career as a map-maker of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s inland settlements with this map. Produced after he returned from his first visit to the Saskatchewan river valley. It is more extensive than that drawn by Hearne, since it extends upstream past the forks of the river, it indicates the lower course of the river to its embouchure in Lake Winnipeg, and it traces the southern track to York Fort via Oxford and Knee Lakes and the Hill river. Turnor’s astronomical observations are almost perfect, in comparison with those of Hearne, but in terms of the details which he portrays, his map is quite inferior, being much more generalized.
