a. (2) The centralsummit, or the Mount of Ascension,2665 feet in height, is situated directlyeast of the temple-area, and is the Mountof Olives proper. Three paths lead tothis summit—one by a nearly directascent, another winding around thesouthern shoulder, and a third path lead-ing around the northern shoulder. Onthe top of this peak is a chapel builtupon the site of a church erected byHelena, the mother of Constantine, sincetradition points out this spot as the placeof the ascension of Christ. The monkspoint out even the footprint made bythe ascending Lord, and the spot, a littlesouth of this, where Christ is said tohave taught the disciples the model, orLords, prayer. None of the depressions whichseparate these summits are very deep;some are to be regarded as quite slight.It is evident that in ancient times thismountain-ridge was covered with olives,myrtles, figs, cypresses, and some speciesof the terebinth or oak, and also aboundedin flowers.
