Beside this beach there is a little alcove, wherethe pebbles are equally well polished, some of a pale, slaty gray, intermingledwith others of a green and deep red hue. With a single companion, he had crossed over to theisland, and both men were engaged in searching for the spring, when a loud andcontinuous bleating directed their steps to the place. Arriving at the edge ofan overhanging cliff, this sorry sight met their gaze. There on the beach stood,perhaps, a hundred sheep, huddled together, and looking appealingly at thespot where the spring had formerly been. Seeing that their own questfor water was fruitless, they hurried away to their boat, and sped to the nearestwater they knew, that of a spring near Promontory.* With the words of this story fresh in our ears, we arrived at the spring, fromwhence we crossed over to the alcove on the opposite shore. Shadows oftwilight hung over the place. Tints of ravishing beauty were on sky and water.Primrose-yellow filled the lower heavens, changing imperceptibly into vaguestgreen, with violet at the zenith. Dim along the horizon, chains of mountainsformed bands of pearly rose, rose gray, and ashes of rose. In the lake deepamber took the place of the primrose, and wherever a breeze ruffled slightlyits otherwise quiet surface, was reflected the violet hue, edged with the palygreen.
