alities. They have two large swimming pools,one for men and one for women. The water is hot andimpregnated with sulphur, said to be very beneficial forrheumatism and skin diseases. There are several beautifullakes here, surrounded by mountains and well filled withfish. We took a small steam launch and went across LakeRotorua about nine miles, when we saw a fine stream ofwater or river flowing from under the mountain; the volumeof water is as wide as one of our streets and several feetdeep. Next we went with our launch through a narrowriver, or channel, to Lake Rotoiti, which is about eightmiles long. The outlet of these two lakes forms a good sizedriver with many rapids and waterfalls; they have utilized asmall part of the water to make electric lights and powerfor the city of Rotorua, which is eighteen miles distant.From there we took a four horse stage and drove to theHot Springs of Tikiteri. There are no spouting geysers atthis place, but there is about two hundred acres covered 37

with boiling lakes and mud volcanoes, all throwing off agreat volume of steam and sulphur vapor. It has theappearance of being very near the infernal regions. Next, we drove half a mile to Blue Lake, the crater ofan extinct volcano. This lake is almost circular, abouthalf a mile across, very deep, fresh water, surrounded bymountains, and has no outlet; the color is a deep blue andis very pretty in contrast with the high walls of greensurrounding it. Driving back to the city, we passed many small hotsprings with clouds of vapor rising from them; immediatelyaround Rotorua, not more than two miles from the city isan important geyser district with a great many boiling lakesand boiling mud baths. A part of this has been set apartfor a government park and is free to the public, but thebest part is the private property of the Maoris (or originalpeople who inhabited the island before the white settlement);they have a village here of three or four hundred; they usesome of these boiling springs
