To knowthat there are alligators and crocodiles in thesawgrass canals, otters with homes on theirbanks, deer, panther, and wildcats, all to behunted, and what is more to the purpose, found,makes the sportsmans days interesting ones andhis evening camp-fire classic! The birds he nolonger shoots; the egret, limpkin, heron, curlew,and crane are not killed just when the youngare most dependent on them — but their rook-eries can be visited and their habits observed.On the edge of the Everglades, to the west, isthe Big Cypress Swamp, and to go into thatfrom the Gulf side gives a new sensation to theNorthern visitor. To go to Lake Okeechobeefrom Kissimmee is a very interesting excursion.Steamboats and motorboats make the journey,with but little trouble to the traveler, but thereal Everglades lie east and south of the greatlake.
