e first-named tinged with grey; chin, greyishwhite, or white, darkest on the sides; the throat exhibits aband of deep black, tinted with grey, which joins the formercolour on the nape; breast, white; back, black, darkest onthe middle part. The wings expand to the width of one foot nine inches;greater and lesser wing coverts, glossy black; primaries, duskyblack, but paler than the secondaries, which are also black;tertiaries, black. The tail consists of sixteen feathers. It isshort, and black in colour. Upper tail coverts, black; legs 168 PUFFIN. and toes, bright orange red; claws, black, the inner one muchhooked; webs, orange red. The female is as the male in plumage and appearance. The young, which are at first covered with blackish downon the upper part, have the head, neck on the back, andnape, and the back and tail, dusky. Varieties of this bird have been known. Some quite whitehave been noticed, and one was seen by Mr. Neill, whichhad only two or three black feathers on the back.

This bird is plentiful on the shores of the islands in theArctic seas of Europe, Asia, and America, from Canada,Labrador, and Greenland, to Iceland, Norway, and Kamts-chatka. It is seen also in Denmark, Holstein, Prussia, France,and Spain, and has occurred on the northern coast of Africa,nameW, at Tangiers. In America a few occasionally go asfar south as New York. The Razor-bill breeds in Yorkshire, at Flamborough Head,the well-known promontory near Burlington; also on theFern Islands. It occurs occasionally at Yarmouth, Norfolk,and along the coast, the young birds more commonly, andthe old ones less so at all times of the year except insummer. This species has occurred in Oxfordshire—for this I havethe authority of the Hon. T. L. Powys. In Cornwall it isnot uncommon near Gwyllyn Vase, S
