ist, for August, 1855,by Mr. Thomas Edward, of that place. The Spur-winged Goose has been kept in the garden ofthe Zoological Society. It appears to be of a morose anddomineering disposition. The spur on the wing, whence thename of the bird, seems to be used as a weapon of attack.Th& one mentioned in the beginning of this article, wasobserved, when first seen, to associate with some Geese ofthe common kind at a farm. Male; bill, dull reddish orange yellow; iris, amber colour.Head on the crown, dull brown; neck on the back, also thesame colour; on the sides of the upper part, white spottedwith brown; on the lower, black. Chin and throat, white;breast on the sides, black; in front and all down, white;back, deep metallic brown, showing purple and copper-colourin different lights, beautifully burnished writh dark -.green. SPUR-WINGED GOOSE. 145 of the upper and front edges of the wings are white. Thesecond, third, and fourth feathers are of equal length, andthe longest; the first and fifth a little shorter. Greaterwing coverts, white, forming a band of that colour acrossthe wing; the primaries and secondaries have most of theouter feathers of a burnished green. The tertiaries arebrilliantly bronzed and glossed with a metallic green; theyare as long as the quill feathers. Tail, brown; under tailcoverts, white.
