pportunity of including inmy work the beautiful Sijrrliaptes paradoxus, so called from theentire absence of a spar or hind toe, and also remarkable for theaberrant character of the beak. Since the first edition of this work was published, a remarkableinvasion of Great Britain was made by this bird. This was in 1863,and a complete history of this irruption, and the localities of almostall the birds captured, somewhere about one hundred and fifty, isgiven by Professor Newton in the Ibis for 1854. I am able toadd one more to the list, which would come in at No. 66*. This birdwas killed at Pelden, and was kindly presented to me by Mr. Carter,of Little Wigborough, and with the three others shot in the countyis now in my collection. According to Dr. Gustavus Padde, who hasgiven a long account of this bird in his Reisen in Suden von OstSiberien, 1861, with plates of the bird and its &g^, it is subject tosudden movements on a very large scale. We appear to have hadsuch a movement in 1863.
