he station are provided with wells in whichthe fish are placed and held while in transit. When a vessel arrives at the station with cod, the fish are immedi-ately transferred with dip nets from the well to live-cars 16 feet long,6 feet wide, and 5 feet deep, which are constructed of wood and dividedinto two compartments by a crosswise partition. As the fish obtainedfrom smacks are paid for by the pound, it is customary to weigh about10 per cent of each load and estimate the total weight by the averageof those weighed. While being weighed, the cod are also counted, about 500 being put in each car. The cars are moored in the middleof a pool or basin protected on all sides by a wharf, which breaks theforce of the sea in stormy weather and affords a sheltered place forhandling the fish and taking the eggs. Cod take little or no food when spawning. The impounded broodfish are often tempted with fresh fish and with fresh and salted clams, Report U. S. F C. 1697. (To face page 2C0.) Plate 55.

The develop-ment of the sexual organs is noted when the dead fish are taken out.Fish about ready to spawn are placed in a separate car and carefullywatched. They are examined two or three times a week and any ripeeggs are taken. In taking and fertilizing the eggs of brood cod the same generalmethods are followed as are adopted on the fishing vessels in IpswichBay. The spawn-taker grasps the ripe fish near the tail with his lefthand and holds the fishs head either between his body and left arm orbetween his thighs, using his right hand to strip the fish. The eggsare usually taken in a bucket. Both the dry and wet methods of fertil-ization are used at Woods Hole. Usually about 80 per cent of the eggstaken are fertilized. Unlike many other fishes artificially propagated, the cod does not yield all of its eggs at one time. After expressing all
