THE CHURCH OF ST. AGNES. By the side of this church, erected by Constantine, stands a templeof a round form, whicli was subsequently changed into the church ofSt. Costanza. This temple has erroneously been called the Sepulchreof Bacchus, from the figures of children playing with bunches ofgrapes, on the wonderful urn of porphyry, that is still preserved ; andfrom the representations in mosaick of the vintage, with which theroof is adorned. This structure is crowned with a dome, which issupported by four and twenty pillars of granite. From the inequalityobservable in these columns it has been conjectured, that this templewas built on the site of one more ancient, for the purpose of a tomb tothe two Constantias, the sister and the daughter of Constantine. Inthe Museum of the Vatican are two superb candlesticks of white marble, and excellent workmanship, designed for this fane by Alexander IV.when he dedicated it to its present patroness, St. Costanza.
