S.The one we saw today was not theHansa, if I could make out the name cor-rectly, but the Sachsen,* so they probablyhave several. Monday, September 22. Spent the day in hunting up various thingsI wanted to see before we leave Berlin. Inthe evening Charles and I went to the IcePalace and saw some good skating by atroop of professionals. One of the ladyperformers, named Charlotte, was verygraceful and with her partner did some won-derful stunts. Tuesday, September 23.Took the train for Dresden. The landabout Berlin is quite flat but seems fertile.The fields are large and appear to be mostlyplanted to potatoes. There is considerabletimber bordering the roads and along thelines that divide the fields. Where everthere is a sandy patch of ground or a ridgethat cannot be cultivated, it is planted withtrees and they are generally evergreens.

We gotpoor rooms at a rather good hotel and werecharged Grand Opera prices for the same. Wednesday, September 24.Bright and early we went to the picturegallery to see the famous Sistine Madonnaby Raphael and other renowned paintings.The Madonna has a room to itself and ishung against dark maroon colored draperiesthat help to light up the picture by contrast.While we were in the room, it was filledwith a number of enraptured females whooccupied all the seats available, so we stoodfor a few minutes afar off and then wentto look at less popular paintings. Afterdinner, this evening, we went across thestreet to the Royal Opera House and sawthe Jewels of the Madonna, which hasno connection whatever with the SistineMadonna.
