Small and extraordinarily slender deep-sea eels with the anus near the head, and often the jaws produced intodelicate diverging points.

Another small deep-sea eel with a snake-likeneck. The maxillae are fused to the skull. Derichthiis, Gill (Fig. 400a) ; Atlantic. ANGUILLIFORMES 407 Family Synaphobranchidae. Deep-sea forms in which the pterygo-palatine arch is lost, and the branchial openings are confluent below.There are small scales. Syncqyhobranchus, Johns. Family Saccopharyngidae. Extraordinarily modified deep-sea eelswith a much-reduced skeleton. The mouth is enormously enlarged, thepalato-quadrate arch incomplete, the hyomandibular very movable, andthe jaws greatly lengthened (Fig. 401, D). Mere loose rods represent thegill-arches, and the branchiostegals have been lost. A small flexible snout overhangs the mouth, and close behind it arethe small eyes. Saccopharynx, Mitch.
