But when Ilooked at the specimen in the British Museum,which is mounted with the wings expanded andtrailing downwards, I was greatly disappointed,for the ocelli appeared flat or even concave,Mr. Gould, however, soon made the case clearto me, for he had made a drawing of a malewhilst he was displaying himself. At such timesthe long secondary feathers in both wings arevertically erected and expanded, and these,together with the enormously elongated tailfeathers, make a grand semi-circular upright fan.Now as soon as the wing feathers are held inthis position, and the light shines on them fromabove, the full effect of the shading comes out,and each ocellus resembles the ornament called theball-and-socket. These feathers have been shownto several artists, and all have expressed theiradmiration at the perfect shading. This inner part is coloured of alighter chestnut, and is thickly dotted withminute white points.
