not scarlet but purplish rose, a very handsome anddistinct species. To the same collector we owe the noblest ofAerides, A. Lawrencice, waxy white tipped withpurple, and deep purple lip. Besides the lovelycolouring it is the largest by far of that genus.Mr. Roebelin sent two plants from the Far East ;he had not seen the flower, nor received any descrip-tion from the natives. Mr. Sander grew them inequal ignorance for three years, and sent one toauction in blossom ; it fell to Sir Trevor Law-rences bid for 235 guineas. Many of the Coelogenes classed as cool, which, indeed, rub along with Odontoglossums, do betterin the stove while growing. Ccel. cristata itselfcomes from Nepaul, where the summer sun isterrible, and it covers the rocks most exposed. But I will only name a few of those recognized ashot. Amongst the most striking of flowers, exquisitely pretty also, is Coel. pandurata, fromBorneo. Its spike has been described by a personof fine fancy as resembling a row of glossy pea- (< V

< P ^ P ^ t-r e HOT ORCHIDS. i6i green frogs with black tongues, each three inchesin diameter. The whole bloom is brilliantlygreen, but several ridges clothed with hairs asblack and soft as velvet run down the lip, seemingto issue from a mouth. It is strange to see thata plant so curious, so beautiful, and so sweetshould be so rarely cultivated ; I own, however, that it is VQ,VY unwilling to make itself at homewith us. Coel. Dayana, also a native of Borneo, one of our newest discoveries, is named after Mr.Day, of Tottenham. I may interpolate a remarkhere for the encouragement of poor but enthusi-astic members of our fraternity. When Mr. Daysold his collection lately, an American Syndicate paid 12,000/. down, and the remaining plantsfetched 12,000/. at auction; so, at least, the un-contradicted report goes. Cccl. Dayana is rare,of course, and dear, but Mr. Sander has latelyimported a large quantity. The spike is threefeet long sometimes, a pendant wreath of buff-yellow flowers broadly
