The rest ofCrooks corps, under this unexpected and terrificonslaught, streamed away to the right and rear;and left the Nineteenth Corps uncovered andwholly unprepared for resistance. General Wright,seeing the serious disadvantage of attempting tohold his original line with the enemy on the flankof the Nineteenth Corps, at once ordered Getty totake the Sixth Corps, which was intact and inperfect condition, to tenable ground in the rear,and directed Emory to fall back and take positionon the right of the Sixth. These orders werepromptly executed, and from the moment the tideof battle struck the heroic Sixth Corps the currentof Confederate victory was stayed; for althoughthey withdrew first to a point west of Middletown,and afterwards to one north of that place, theyfought with undaunted energy, and, making
