The let-ter S indicates that the material used is stone, and theletter B, brick. It will be observed that the founda-tion of the obelisk is sunk much deeper than the otherwalls. The spiral stairway is seen commencing on alevel with the Terrace. A small section of the graniteparapet, which extends around the Terrace, is seen ateach end of the cut. The small dark spots in MemorialHall and the Catacomb, are the small windows previ-ously described. The elevation at the south side is aprofile of the pedestal for the statue of Lincoln. It isthirty-five and a half feet above the ground line, andnineteen feet eight inches above the Terrace. In preparing the granite for the monument, a seriesof ashlars, two feet by two feet nine inches, are sodressed that each presents the appearance of a raised AND THE NATIONAL LINCX)LN MONUMENT. 149

150 THE GREAT FUNERAL CORTEGE, shield. The names of the States are engraved on theseshields. The shortest are given in full, and the longestabbreviated. These shields form a part of the wall,around the entire base, and the four pedestals, alter-nating with an ashlar of the same size. On each ofthese alternating ashlars, are two. raised bands, runninghorizontally, giving to the States the appearance ofbeing linked together, as it were, by an endless chain.The body of the granite is dressed to a true surface,and the bands and letters are polished. To completea course around the edifice, there were three moreshields than the whole number of States. These threeare built in at the east side, and left blank, ready toreceive the names of any States that may hereafter beadmitted. (See Fig. 10.) The following is the order in which the States areplaced, beginning on the east side, at the right of theblanks, and continuing to the right around the monu-ment.
