Text Appearing Before Image:
esh-water navigators had bargained for.Tied up to a bank at night, as was their custom, the twainslept soundly after their day of toil, when they werewaked by a scrambling near at hand. Springing to hisfeet, Abraham shouted, Who s there? There was noreply, and, seizing a handspike, he made ready for an at-tack. Seven negroes, evidently on an errand of plunder, now appeared. Abe held himself ready to repel board-ers, and the first man that jumped on board was receivedwith a heavy blow that knocked him into the water. Asecond, a third, and a fourth, essaying the same thing, were similarly received. The other three, seeing thatthey were no match for the tall backwoodsman and hisally, took to their heels, pursued by Abe and Allen.Overtaking the negroes, a hand-to-hand fight ensued, butthe thieves finally fled again, leaving on the future Presi-dent a scar that he carried to his grave. The voyage to the Lower Mississippi and return occu-pied three months. The cargo was sold to good advantage
Text Appearing After Image:
A GLIMPSE OF SLAVERY. \\ before reaching New Orleans. Then the empty boatbeing disposed of, for it would not pay to take it homeup-stream, the two adventurers, elated with their firstnotable success, made their way homeward by steamboat. They had seen a bit of the great world. And AbrahamLincoln had seen what he never forgot, his first closeview of human slavery. Slaves toiling on the plantations, slaves bending beneath their tasks on the levees of theriver towns, and, what was more memorable than all, slaves in squads and coffles, torn from old homes andfamilies far away, bound up the river on the steamboatsthat were now frequent on the busy Mississippi. Hewho was to be known through all coming time as TheEmancipator, had made his first study of his fellow-manin hopeless bondage. It is well to consider here that Abraham Lincoln, upto this point, was what is called a self-made man in thestrictest sense of that word. What he had learned, hehad learned of himself. What he knew, he knew wit
