New Orleans has had rapid growth in manufactures.It takes high rank in the refining of sugar. Shreveport, on the Red river, is in a rich cotton dis-trict. This city is the second cotton market in the state,and has a larg-e river traffic. Steamboat and railroadlines connect it with New Orleans. Baton Rouge is thecapital. Texas. Texas is the largest state in the Union. Itsarea is greater than that of all the New England andMiddle states together ; it is three times as large as GreatBritain. Dallas and Fort Worth are centers of trade in the north-eastern part of the Texas prairies, — in a rich farming andgrazing district. Grain and cattle are shipped from thisdistrict. Cotton Picking.

Hot Springs is a well-known resort for invalids. Oklahoma. This territory was opened to white settlersin 1889, and is now only thinly settled. Corn and cottonare raised in some parts, while others are suitable only forgrazing. Oklahoma and Guthrie are the principal towns. Indian Territory.
