The equipment is particularly adapted for use upon heavygrades where empties are hauled up the grade and loads down. AIR BRAKES ino The 70-poiind brake-pipe pressure provides for a proper control ofthe empty cars, and requires less work from the compressor, whilethe 90-pound pressure makes it possible to obtain higher brake-cylinder pressures to compensate for the increased weight to becontrolled when the cars are loaded. The loaded weight of the caris still, however, sufficiently in excess of the maximum brakingpower obtainable to insure an ample margin against wheel sliding. LN* Passenger=Car Brake Equipment. The demand for amore efficient brake equipment for passenger service, to meet thenew conditions of heavier trains, faster speeds, and more frequentservice, resulted in the development of the LN* equipment.
