Alfred Krupp has builded his own monuments—thoseof stone and iron, which tell of his executive force andof his achievements in the field of industrial progress—those of good deeds and benevolent measures, which tellof the generous heart of which his mental powers werebut the servitors. I.—ESSEN. The city of Essen lies north-east of Dusseldorf,and isreached from Brussels by way either of Cologne or ofGladbach. It is situated in the fertile basin of the Ruhr,near Duisburg, another manufacturing city. Indeed,Essen is in the centre of the great factory district ofWestphalia, a veritable hive of industry, in which arealso to be found, Crefeld, Elberfeld, and Dortmund.These are not the only noticeable features of Essensposition, for it lies in one of those fortunate regions inwhich Nature has stored abundant coal and iron, thevery bases of metal working.
