One plot of Aroma and Fendall berries produced 15,000 quarts per acre for John R. Snyder, Sullivan
County, Indiana
Introduction
N PRESENTING our 1917 Book of Berries to our friends and patrons, we include also a
hearty wish that each one may have a successful and prosperous year. We are now beginning
our third year as The \V. F. Allen Co. The company is composed of Mr. W. F. Allen, his
wife, and three of his sons. We are all devoting our energies to growing the best Strawberry
plants that can be grown. In order that we may be of even greater service to Strawberry-
growers, we have discontinued all of our side lines, except California Privet. We know
by letters from thousands of our customers that our plants are giving perfect satisfaction,
the results often being greater than expected, except from those who have used our plants
long enough to expect great things of them.
In this new book we have covered the field of Strawberry-growing quite completely. We believe those
who have grown berries will find many helpful ideas, and those who have never grown berries can do so
successfully by thoroughly studying the instructions and following the directions.
Our varieties this year are grouped as to season of ripening — extra early, medium early, mid-season,
late, and very late. We believe this will help in the selection of varieties.
You will notice that we are not illustrating in colors as many varieties as heretofore. Our aim has
been to give to the varieties illustrated their exact shade of color, so that growers could more easily select
varieties for their own market. Inasmuch as the cost of color work is greatly increased, and as it is so hard
to get the exact shade of color on each variety, we are dropping all color work, except the covers. Our
clear-cut illustrations from actual photographs show about as much as the color illustrations, except for
the color. We have been very careful about this in our descriptions, and we think you will find a rather
complete description of each variety including its color. The descriptions are accurate.
We are sometimes asked about the so-called "thoroughbred" or "pedigreed" plants. We are ex-
plaining the subject rather thoroughly on page 7, giving our own convictions, in addition to those of other
practical growers and scientific investigators, who have tried out, side by side, the so-called "pedigreed"
plants and those which claim no pedigree. This explanation is in no way intended as a knock at
those using the terms "pedigreed" and "thoroughbred" for business reasons and we shall not be so
considered, except by those afraid of the facts.
Our plants are the equal of any Strawberry
plants grown and superior to the vast majority of
plants supplied to growers in this country. Read
page 12. We give reasons why we can and proof
that we do grow the best in Strawberry plants.
We want to call your attention to the fact that
our prices on several standard varieties, as Bubach,
Big Joe, Klondyke, Missionary, Sample, Senator
Dunlap, and others, have been lowered this year.
And this has been done despite the fact that every-
thing connected with the growing and shipping
of the plants is higher — labor, packages, packing
material, fertilizers, manure, etc. We are able to
do this because our plants have made a very vigor-
ous and strong growth, and our stock, especially of
the varieties mentioned, is quite large. We are
giving our patrons the benefit of this and we feel
sure it will be appreciated.
We ask for your patronage. We offer the best
plants, heavy roots, large crowns, freshly dug daily,
twenty-five in a bunch, good count, each bunch
labeled, prompt shipment, unsurpassed packing,
courteous treatment. May we have your order?

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
