I dont believe there was an officer or man onany ship who did not try to get a place on the Merrimac. It was decided that I could not go. I wanted to stand by the ship tothe last, but at three oclock on the morning of June 3d the Admiral cameaboard and told me I could not. It was Hobsons scheme, and by right itwas his to carry out, he said. Then he took me aboard the flagship, whereall but three of my men were sent. The night was intensely dark, and not a sound came from the Span-ish batteries as Hobson and his men entered the channel. We thought wehad silenced the batteries, but soon learned our mistake. A long, thin flashcame from Moro. We could not hear the roar, because we were too far out,but we knew it was a signal gun.
