While on the Puritan in the Brooklyn Navy Yard last July, he pre-vented a catastrophe by saving the ship from being blown up when the boilerwas on fire. For this act of bravery he was given a medal, which he nowwears. He will return to some place in the navy after a few weeks rest inBrooklyn. A Sailors Letter to His Mother. James C. Darcy, of New York City, a first-class fireman on the gunboatWilmington^ gives a graphic account of the fight at Cardenas in a letter tohis mother, written the day after the battle occurred.
