Interesting Particulars About Admiral Deweys Officers.Captain Gridley of the Olympia, Captain Coghlan of the Raleigh, andCaptain Wildes of the Boston, who fought together at Manila, were class-mates at the naval academy, graduating in 1803, and Gridley and Wildesroomed together. Dyer of the Baltimore is not a graduate of Annapolis,but came into the navy as a volunteer during the war. Captain Gridleywas from Erie, Pennsylvania, where he married a daughter of Judge JohnP. Vincent, one of the most eminent jurists of Pennsylvania. He was con-sidered one of the ablest officers in the service. About three weeks afterthe battle of Manila he was condemned, as the medical examinersexpress it, on account of rupture, from which he had been suffering forsome time, and was sent home, but died on the passage, near Kobe, Japan,June 4. The Admiral accompanied him out of the bay, bidding him an affec-tionate, and, as it proved to be, a last farewell on the deck of the ship asshe took her departure.

DEWEYS BREAKFAST. 223 Lieutenant Calkins of the Olympia is famous as a writer upon naval sci-ence. He has taken at least five gold medals for prize essays upon profes-sional subjects. Lieutenant Wiuterhalter of the Baltimore was on the battleship Illinoisduring the Worlds Fair. He has only one eye. The other was accidentallyshot out by a lady in an archery tournament. Lieutenant Tappan of theRaleigh commanded the caravel Pinla, and Lieutenant Howard of the Bostoncommanded the Nina when they were brought over from Spain before theWorlds Fair. Lieutenant Braunersreuther of the Baltimore is famous for having thelongest name of any man in the navy, and for receiving a gold medal fromthe Humane Society for rescuing a woman from drowning at New Londonsome years ago. She happened to be his mother-in-law. Sumner C. Payne, the executive officer of the Olympia, is one of theablest and brightest officers in the navy. He comes from Maine, and hasbeen serving with the Asiatic squadron since 1895.
