Shebore down upon the Minnesota, andpoured in a destructive broadside, whensuddenly an unexpected little antagonistdarted out to oppose the monster. Nowbegan the terrible- iron-clad duel. Theparticipants were so close together thatthe fiery tongues of the opposing gunswere interwoven. The Merrimac pouredforth masses of iron weighing two hun-dred pounds ; but these were smashedon the cheese-box, and fell back on thedeck of the Monitor like balls of softclay. However, the pilot-house of theMonitor was struck twice with such vio-lence by the projectiles from the Merri-mac that some cement was shivered, striking Capt. Worden in the face. Hewas blinded for several days, and at onetime his life was despaired of. TheMerrimac was struck two or three timesin the port-holes, by some well-aimedshots, and considerably disabled. Shethen turned her attention to the Minne-sota, which she fired by a few broad-sides. But the Monitor again interfered.
