EIGHT-WHEELS COUPLED COMPOUND WEBBSSYSTEMi COAL ENGINE, LONDON & NORTH-WESTERN RAILWAY. About the end of 1802 Mr. F. W. Webb, Chief .MechanicalEngineer of the London & Northwestern Railway, designedand built a simple eight-coupled coal engine for heavy miner-al and goods traffic, and a few months subsequently he turnedout a similar engine on his compound principle, and of whichwe give an illustration on page 516. It will be noticed from the illustration, and also from theparticulars given below, that the boiler of the compound en-gine is of the ordinary type, and not of Mr. Webbs patentcombustion chamber type, with which the simple engine wasfitted. All three cylindeis work on to the same axle, which is built upof three pieces after the style of a marine crauk shaft, the mid-dle throw being of cast steel.

AND RAILROAD JOURNAL. 517 Mr. Webb decided, in order to determine the relative ad-vantages and suitability of compound r«. simple engines forworking mineral and ordinary goods traffic, to test these twoengines as nearly as possible under identical conditions. Thetrials were made on April 1 last, and by the courtesy of Mr.Webb we are able to publish the following particulars of them : Two trains were used, composed of loaded coal wagons andthe necessary brake-vans, which were all carefully weighedprevious to the trials. Xo. 1 train consisted of one dynamome-ter car, 52 loaded wagons and three brake-vans—total weight,695 tons, IB cwts. 2 qrs. 14 lbs. Xo. 2 train was made up inthe same way, except that in the place of the dynamometercar a loaded wagon was added, equal to the weight of the car—the total weight of this train being 690
