This quaint old engraving of St. Helena is from the Navigations of Jan Huygen van Linschoten, published at Amsterdam in 1610. Linschoten, a man of Harlem by birth, sailed to the East in the train of Bishop Fonseca of Portugal. He tells us that the only regular inhabitant of the island was a hermit; but sick men were often left there, with some rice and biscuit, to recover from scurvy, and then picked up by other ships, this being a regular place of call. He tells us that inscriptions on the island went back as far as 1510. There are some wonderful pictures of flying fish in the vicinity of the island.
