Text Appearing Before Image:
they looked there came a roar of immense volume, alittle interval, just enough to be distinguishable, and then asharp crashing report, a burst of flame high in the air, and agreat rising mass of smoke, streaked with burning or black fly-ing objects. The bow of the Maine rose out of the water, andthen, before the light of the explosion faded, the ship settledback and down — deeper and deeper — while round the bowsurged a foaming semicircle of water, of debris, and groaningmen, the cries for help falling to a low murmur as the bowsettled below the foam. Such was the frightful spectacle from a little distance inthat awful moment — at 9.40 on the night of February 15th. Death sealed the lips of 260 of her gallant men. All thatwas known of their experience was told in that appealing cryfor help as it mingled with the hissing and the roaring of thefearful maelstrom of fire and water in which they were strug-gling — a cry which died away into a moan and then intothe silence of death.
Text Appearing After Image:
A NIGHT OF HORROR 415 Captain Sigsbee was just finisliing his letter when he feltthe first crash of the explosion, the trembling and lurchingmotion of tJie vessel and the subsidence. The electric lightswent out. He thought at once that the Maine had been blownup and was sinking. Thinking it might be necessary for himto make an exit by the cabin port holes on the starboard herushed in that direction, but found that he could get out by thepassage leading to the superstructure. He, therefore, tookthe latter route, feeling his way along and steadying himselfby the bulkheads. At the quarter deck he found some of hisofficers who had escaped, asked a few questions hurriedly, andthen climbed up on the side-rail, holding to the main riggingin order to see over the poop awning, which was covered withdebris, but he could make little out of the black mass ahead ofhim. He ordered Lieutenant-Commander Wainwright to postsentries all around the ship, but in a moment they saw thatthere were no marines
