They called Palestine the HolyLand because Jesus had lived and preached there. Thecity of Jerusalem and the country of Palestine had in timefallen into the hands of the followers of the great Arabprophet, Mohammed. The Mohammedans continued fora long while, however, to allow the Christian pilgrims^ tomake their visits of devotion to the Holy Land unmolested.But when Palestine was conquered by a fierce tribe ofTurks, the pilgrims were treated with such cruelty thatthe whole Christian world was thrilled with horror by it. 1 Great numbers of these pilgrims used to journey to the shrines of famoussaints. They wore long cloaks and carried staffs and sacks for their bread.They often begged their way.
