ting of town houses;it is not, however, one of his best examples, and was in allprobability an early work. Another design, which shows a very original treatmentof plan for a narrow site, is that for the Conte GiovanniBattista della Torre, at Verona. No elevation of the exterioris given in Palladios book, but merely a plan and longi-tudinal section. The entrances are 11 feet 6 inches wide on the narrowsides facing streets, and lead to two courts, each 57 feet longby 34 feet wide. Wedged in between these two courts aretwelve Ionic columns grouped to support the upper hall.The lower hall leads to an elliptical main staircase andsecondary stairs. The facades of these courts are orna-mented with Ionic and Corinthian pilasters and entablatures,the upper order being placed on pedestals. A galleryis carried round on the top of the Ionic entablature at thefirst floor level, for the purpose of intercommunication.There is a spacious breadth about this plan which is verypleasing and satisfactory.
