Cette loi trouve sa meilleure expression dansle contraste que les récentes explorations ont si bien fait ressortirentre les allures des deux pôles : lun, le pôle boréal, entouré par unemer dont la profondeur dépasse par endroits 3 500 mètres ; lautre, lepôle austral, centre dune grande masse continentale dont le rivagecoïncide presque exactement avec le cercle polaire antarctique.
