Family worship was almost universal, as was alsothe custom of asking a blessing at the beginning andof returning thanks at the close of every meal. Inmost families the Sabbath began and ended at sun-down, but a few thought with Mr. Pyncheon, thatthe Lords day did begin with the natural morningat midnight, and end with the natural evening atmidnight. At first there were few clocks or watches, thehour glass, sun dial, and noon mark bemg used tomark the time. But by the close of the last century,tall clocks had become common.
