Parker, archaeologist of the New York StateMusexjm,* writes to Mr. Letchworth, under date of January 20.1910: Several days ago one of the Cattaraugus (ndians, a Seneca,told me that his father always referred to the Lower Falls and in- Mr deed the whole gorge from the Upper to the Lower Falls asGa-gwa-dio, which means Snn-rising-up. I wrote down thename, thinking it might interest yon. * Professor Parker is partly of Indian descent. Tlis Seneca name is Oa-wa-BO-wa-neh, a war-chiefs name of the Bear Clan. Gen. Ely Samuel Parker,the famous Seneca chief, was his fathers uncle. General Parkers boyhoodname was ITa-sa-no-an-da, hut when lie was elected doorkeeper of the Leagueof the Iroquois he received the name and title of Do-ne-ha-pa-wa. GeneralParker was of the Wolf Clan.
