l electrons on which the ordinary physical and chemical prop-erties depend. The study of the light spectra and also of the X-rayspectra already promise to throw new light on this very difficultbut fundamental problem, RADIUM AND THE ELECTRON—RUTHERFORD. 203 From the above hurried survey of the progress of atomic physicsit will be seen that the investigations of the past twenty-five yearshave dealt mainly with three great outstanding problems, viz, thenature of electricity, the structure of the atom, and the nature ofradiation. While great additions have been made to our knowledgeof these questions leading to a much wider outlook, we can not butrecognize that much still remains to be done before we are certainthat we are building on a firm foundation for the future. Notwith-standing the prolonged halt during the war, the scientific outlook isone of good augury for the immediate future, and there is everyprospect that the vigorous attack on these outstanding problems willbe continued.

THE HD-4. * A 70-MILER WITH REMARKABLE POSSIBILITIES DEVELOPED AT DR. GRAHAM bells laboratories on the bras dor LAKES. By William Washburn Nutting. (With 9 plates.) One of the most interesting of the many strange things that havecome from Dr. Graham Bells laboratories is a weird-looking gliderthat recently has been tearing about the peaceful Bras dOr Lakes atthe rate of 70 miles an hour. The BD-<4 is not a hydroplane in the usual sense of the term. It isthe successful development of the idea, by no means new, of liftingthe hull clear of the water by a system of submerged planes not apart of the hull itself. In other words, it uses the denser medium toobtain the lift and takes advantage of the low resistance to pro-pulsion offered by the air. An ordinary hydroplane, of course, utilizes the lifting principle and dodges much of the resistance ofthe water, but it is still comparatively inefficient in that it uses onlythe lower and by far the less important surface of the plane.
