Pneumonia.—The number of deaths caused by pneumonia in1901 was 742, as against 966 in 1900. Pneumonia has graduallyincreased in importance as a cause of death for the last thirty-fiveyears. See Reg. Rep., Table LXXXVI, page 265. Scarlet Fever.—The number of deaths in 1901 was 21, 13 lessthan in 1900. The proportion was 0.3 per cent, of the whole num-ber of deaths. Scarlet fever has largely decreased in epidemicprevalence and proportion of mortality during the last fifteenyears, as compared with previous periods of fifteen years each. Small-Pox.—There were 5 deaths from small-pox in 1901, in 1900there was one, two in 1894, none in 1893, and four in 1892. Thediminution of cases, and the decrease of mortality as a consequence,has been quite remarkable during the last fifteen years. REPORT OF CONTAGIOUS DISEASES DURING 1901. Since the year 1893 a system of reports of contagious diseaseswhich have been reported to the health officers in the various townsand cities has been kept up by means of reports on circular postalcards to the State Board. This makes it possible to obtain a fairlycomparative observation of the prevalence of these diseases duringthe several months, and in the course of the year. It is admitted that not all cases of these diseases have been re-ported to the health officers. The physicians in two or three ofthe towns and cities do not make any effort to report their cases,owing to the inefficiency of the health officer and the apparentuselessness of making such reports, since no action, or only a tardyaction, is taken to avail the public of the advantages accruing fromthe knowledge of the existence of these diseases.
